Teach kids to count with unique animal features! Naturalist Numbers – The Odd Anatomy of
Ordinary Animals is a counting book from Oregon authors John D.Maddin and Michelle E.
Canby, Oregon, December 4, 2023 – Illustrator/author John D. Maddin and co-author Michelle E.
Walch today announced that their counting book Naturalist Numbers is available to order. Children
ages four and up will learn their numbers with delightful pictures and diagrams highlighting the unique
features of animals. John D. Maddin’s scratchboard illustrations are complex and beautiful. The
anatomical diagrams make it easy to understand the physicality of select creatures.
The continued success of their first book, Letters of the West, informed Walch and Maddin that it was
time to create book two. Their successful October 2022 crowd-funding campaign enabled them to selfpublish
and bring their second book to fruition.
The Picture Book Review of Letters of the West: “Learn the English and Latin names of plants and
animals in this alphabet book filled with gorgeous and accessibly sophisticated scratchboard
illustrations. This picture book is a beautiful tribute to our natural world and our alphabet. The
scratchboard illustrations are black and white with one to two colors highlighting each image. The
effect is profound — making it a perfect picture book for those wanting to introduce children of all
ages to nature through the alphabet.”
