It’s All About the Ear Cuff

Ear Cuffs: what’s the point?

Ear cuffs are a nice addition to anyone’s jewelry collection. Sometimes called ear clips, they were popular in the Nineties as a nice alternative to those who couldn’t wear earrings due to allergies or for those whose parents frowned upon pierced ears. For those who liked the layering look, ear cuffs/clips were a nice addition.

History of Ear Cuffs/Ear Clips

It turns out that ear cuffs have a very long history. Originally called kaffa, the earliest ear cuffs that have been found were located in burial sites in the British Isles dating back to around 2000 B.C. Kaffa/ear cuffs have been found in Greece that date back to 350 B.C. Additionally, they’ve been found in Asia, dating to around 1200 A.D.

Ear cuffs in the past were worn for ceremonial purposes, but were also worn by just about anyone, regardless of status, for decoration.

In the 1950’s, ear cuffs were a way for women to show their wealth, and jewelers were ready to please, creating kaffas with precious jewels and metals. Marilyn Monroe and Lucille Ball wore them to fancy events.

Fast forward to the Nineties. Ear cuffs were generally simple bands. However, there were some designed to look like a human being hanging on the lobe or neon plastic bands. The Eighties and Nineties were the beginning of multiple piercings in the U.S. and Europe, so why stop at a single piercing in each lobe? Ear cuffs added a bohemian/tribal look that caught on fast.
